Tipping Guidelines

A Practical Guide to Tipping in Africa

Learn when and how much to tip safari guides, trackers, lodge staff and transfer teams, with practical guidance to help you show appreciation for excellent service.

Tipping is optional but appreciated as a way to thank staff for great service. Here are suggested amounts based on common safari and hospitality practices:

  • Road transfers: $10–$20 per transfer
  • Day tours and excursions: $20–$50 per day
  • Safari guide and tracker teams: $20–$50 per person, per day (shared)
  • Lodge staff: A similar amount in the communal tip box if the overall service was good

You’re welcome to adjust the amount based on your experience. Outstanding service may merit more, while poor service may mean a smaller tip—or no tip.
